Everyone needs support at times to work through life stressors, changes, and illness. Even if you are seeking help with relationships or managing your emotions and thoughts, you can do this through individual therapy. Give yourself a safe space to get support for whatever is weighing on your shoulders.

Teens & Young Adults: Students, Jobs, and Life.

Teen years and Transitioning in to adulthood can be difficult for many. One minute you are graduating high school and focusing on making memories, and the next you are expected to know where you are going in life through work or school. Many young adults are also struggling with defining who they are through their own decisions, and through new life experiences. Therapy can be a great place to take the time to work through your thoughts and feelings that can be difficult to sift through with all of life's new demands.

Adults:

Stress, career demands, family/ friend relationships and responsibilities,  caring for parents or family members, loss of relationships, sex, spirituality, Individual growth, career transitions, trauma, anxiety, depression, concentration and focus are just a few topics that adults of all ages often struggle with.

When it feels like something is weighing heavily on you, or throwing you off track, it can be incredibly beneficial to explore what those underlying issues, thoughts, and feelings are. Therapy can often help in teaching us ways to decrease symptoms, increase ways we can cope with issues, prevent and recover from burnout and finding clarity within ourselves.

Senior Adults:

When we enter this stage of our life, sometimes we never imagined it being more difficult than other things we've encountered and overcome. Many times seniors struggle with what age brings to their physical abilities, life stages, children and grandchildren being far away, or becoming parents again for grandchildren.

Finances, retirement, and losing loved ones are often very difficult during this time. Here at NS Counseling, we can be the place where you can get support and guidance.

Couples:

We welcome couples seeking assistance in navigating difficult topics in their relationship, learning how to communicate and connect in a healthy way, learning how to continue to have love and affection with one another, learning how to hear one another and how to repair when there are arguments or betrayal.

Our clinicians are happy to provide a space where both parties can work towards a richer relationship. Clinicians have a background in Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy.

Couples, Partners, Pre-marital therapy and married couples are welcome!

EMDR Therapy & Brainspotting

EMDR

Nicole is Certified in EMDR therapy, by what is considered the Gold standard of training by EMDRIA.

EMDR is most well known for working with trauma or PTSD. However there are many other effective uses for EMDR. Traditional therapy is certainly effective, and can have wonderful benefits, but can take months, or years of treatment, depending on the goal of the client. Research has shown that EMDR can lead to results in a much shorther amount of time.

 EMDR can help with:

  • Stress

  • Low Self Esteem

  • Lack of Motivation

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Anger/ irritability

  • Traumatic events

  • Childhood trauma or life events that impact you as an adult today

  • Fear of being alone

  • Unrealistic feelings of guilt and shame

  • Difficulty of trusting others

  • Relationships Problems

  • Addressing "stuck behaviors" or behaviors you would like to change.

  • Addictions

  • Recovery from an affair or betrayal

  • Complicated Grief

  • Performance Anxiety

and much more. For more information if EMDR can help you, please contact me so we may discuss in a brief consultation.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

"EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal.  EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.  When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound.  If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes.  The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.

More than 30 positive controlled outcome studies have been done on EMDR therapy.  Some of the studies show that 84%-90% of single-trauma victims no longer have post-traumatic stress disorder after only three 90-minute sessions.  Another study, funded by the HMO Kaiser Permanente, found that 100% of the single-trauma victims and 77% of multiple trauma victims no longer were diagnosed with PTSD after only six 50-minute sessions. In another study, 77% of combat veterans were free of PTSD in 12 sessions. There has been so much research on EMDR therapy that it is now recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the Department of Defense. Given the worldwide recognition as an effective treatment of trauma, you can easily see how EMDR therapy would be effective in treating the “everyday” memories that are the reason people have low self-esteem, feelings of powerlessness, and all the myriad problems that bring them in for therapy. Over 100,000 clinicians throughout the world use the therapy.  Millions of people have been treated successfully over the past 25 years." (information found at http://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/)

Caregivers
Caregivers

For years I have worked with individuals with chronic mental illness, developmental disabilities, and those struggling with their aging process. In all of those populations, I have always worked with their support system, or caregivers who are the backbone of helping these individuals get all of their needs met as best as they can. I often psychoeducate these caregivers on what their loved one is struggling with, how to support their treatment and needs. More often than not, these caregivers are giving every ounce of themselves to their loved ones. You give your time, your energy, your support, your attention, and set aside your own needs as you struggle helping your loved one manage the difficult moments in their life. What happens when it feels like you just can't give anymore? When you wish that you had someone to just take some of the burden off your shoulders?

Learning how to care for yourself is just as important as caring for your loved one.

Make an appointment today to set time aside to care for yourself and to have someone assist you with your needs because you need it, and because you deserve it.

The Helping Professionals

Who is here to serve you when you have taken on the job to serve your country or your community?

Besides life's stressors of relationships, work demands, financial issues, and raising children, you have an additional task of serving your community or your country. These high demand careers are often exposed to emotionally taxing and physically exhausting situations. Being exposed once or several times to traumatic events can lead to burn out. This can result in new challenges, and difficulty managing work, relationships and the home environment.

In addition, many times our military community has a difficult time transitioning to the "civilian world". New challenges arise as you are immersed in to the culture of people looking out for themselves rather than their team/ squad/ company/ unit.

Therapy can be beneficial in helping these difficult times, and keeping your confidentiality in tact.

Please contact me for more information regarding discounted rates for Military (active/veteran/retired)/Fire/Law Enforcement. Having family in each of these fields, it is important to me to also serve those who serve.
